Brooke Greenberg: 20-Year-Old "Toddler's" Legacy of Hope and Love

Source: Yahoo Shine
By:

Brooke's growth was erratic in the womb. "One month she would be fine, one month she would just stop and play catchup," Brooke's mother, Melanie, told NBC Dateline. She was born a month prematurely, weighing only 4 pounds, and suffered from a rare form of hip dislocation that required surgery. Nevertheless, during her first year, Brooke's parents thought she would grow up and have a normal life. However, between ages 1 and 6, Brooke suffered a number of medical emergencies, including perforated stomach ulcers, a seizure, and a stroke — and she also stopped growing. Her parents consulted many specialists, but none could diagnose any endocrine or chromosomal abnormalities. Instead, doctors prescribed human growth hormone, which ultimately failed.

After Brooke's case caught Dr. Schadt's attention, his team began sequencing her DNA, looking for specific mutations related to her condition. He explained that by using stem cells taken from Brooke's skin, scientists can continue to study the special genes and other biological factors they identified, "seek to determine how they are involved in aging-related processes, and whether this new knowledge could help increase longevity and/or reduce aging-related disorders." He added, "Brooke’s contribution to human well-being ultimately could be a reduction in our overall disease burden — a gift to modern medicine and humanity.”

While Brooke's mysterious condition may lead to amazing scientific discoveries, on a quieter and more intimate level, she also leaves behind an inspiring legacy of unconditional love. "While the outside world may have noticed Brooke's physical stature and been puzzled by her unique development state, she brought joy and love to her family," Rabbi Andrew Busch, who spoke at her funeral on Sunday, told the Daily News. Throughout her life, her parents and three sisters cherished her and showered her with affection. She loved to be cuddled and tickled, and the Greenbergs said she developed a strong identity and a rebellious streak. When her younger sister, Carly, was born, she became jealous, like any other child would be, her parents said. And, despite the challenges the family faced over the years, their devotion never wavered. "The older she gets, it's unbelievable…everybody just wants to hold her," mother Melanie Greenberg told WBAL. Her dad called her "his angel."

Brunei laksana hukum Hudud

Sumber: Utusan

BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN 22 Okt.

9 October World Post Day

Source: Universal Postal Union

Messengers

The first known postal document, found in Egypt, dates from 255 BC. But even before that time postal services existed on nearly every continent in the form of messengers serving kings and emperors. Over time, religious orders and universities added their own message delivery systems to exchange news and information. Relay stations were set up along the messengers’ routes to speed delivery over long distances. Eventually, private individuals were allowed to use the messengers to communicate with one another.
During the 17th and 18th centuries, the exchange of mail between countries was largely governed by bilateral postal agreements. But by the 19th century, the web of bilateral agreements had become so complex that it began to impede the rapidly developing trade and commercial sectors. Order and simplification were needed in the international postal services.

Sir Rowland Hill

The process was started by national postal reforms. The most noteworthy reform occurred in England in 1840, when Sir Rowland Hill introduced a system whereby postage on letters had to be prepaid. Furthermore, uniform rates were charged for all letters of a certain weight in the domestic service, regardless of the distance travelled. Sir Rowland Hill was also credited with introducing the world’s first postage stamp.
In 1863, United States Postmaster General Montgomery Blair called a conference in Paris. Delegates from 15 European and American countries met and succeeded in laying down a number of general principles for mutual agreements. But the scope of their decisions was limited and they were not able to settle on an international postal agreement.

Heinrich von Stephan

This task was left to Heinrich von Stephan, a senior postal official from the North German Confederation. He drew up a plan for an international postal union, and at his suggestion, the Swiss Government convened an international conference in Bern on 15 September 1874. The conference was attended by representatives from 22 nations.

9 October

On 9 October of the same year – a day now celebrated throughout the world as World Post Day – the Treaty of Bern, establishing the General Postal Union, was signed. Membership in the Union grew so quickly during the following three years that its name was changed to the Universal Postal Union in 1878.
The 1874 Treaty of Bern succeeded in unifying a confusing international maze of postal services and regulations into a single postal territory for the reciprocal exchange of letters. The barriers and frontiers that had impeded the free flow and growth of international mail had finally been pulled down.

World Post Day is celebrated each year on 9 October, the anniversary of the establishment of the Universal Postal Union (UPU) in 1874 in the Swiss capital, Berne. It was declared World Post Day by the UPU Congress held in Tokyo, Japan, in 1969.

The purpose of World Post Day is to create awareness of the role of the postal sector in people’s and businesses’ everyday lives and its contribution to the social and economic development of countries. The celebration encourages member countries to undertake programme activities aimed at generating a broader awareness of their Post’s role and activities among the public and media on a national scale.

Impian yang telah lama terpendam...

Assalamualaikum,

Salam Jumaat semua..

Seperti biasa, hari Jumaat ni mulalah rasa gembira sebab hujung minggu boleh pergi jalan-jalan. Hehe.. Tapi rasa macam masa terlalu lambat berlalu.. (Oh, malam ni ada Kampung Girl di TV3.. Hehe!)

Sekarang ni saya rasa macam nak menulis novel.. apa pendapat anda?

Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD)

Source: Yahoo! Health

On occasion, many of us may worry about whether or not we left the stove on before leaving the house or if we locked our doors. This worry may prompt us to return home to make sure that everything is all right. While this type of worry and behavior is normal, some people experience extreme anxiety about these issues. Often the anxiety is so intense that it impacts a person’s ability to live a normal life. To reduce the anxiety, the person may engage in repetitive actions and may experience an increase in anxiety if these actions are not performed. When this occurs, the person may be diagnosed with obsessive-compulsive disorder or OCD.

Obsessive-compulsive disorder is an anxiety disorder. People who develop this disorder have uncontrollable thoughts and fears (obsessions). These obsessions cause repetitive behaviors (compulsions) that the person uses in an effort to stop the obsessions. People with this disorder may realize that their obsessions are unreasonable, and they may try to stop their compulsive behavior. Stopping the compulsive behavior increases anxiety and distress, driving the person to resume performing the behavior.

The causes of OCD are not clearly understood. Most people who have the disorder develop it before the age of 30. OCD has been linked to head injuries and certain types of infections. There is no evidence that people with OCD have any brain abnormalities. In some patients, OCD may be linked to Tourette syndrome.

Three theories have been developed to explain the cause of OCD. These include:
  • Biological causes—OCD may be caused by genetic abnormalities. People with OCD often have a close relative that has the disorder.
  • Environmental causes—OCD may develop as a result of behaviors that have been learned over time.
  • Insufficient levels of serotonin—OCD may occur if levels of serotonin in your brain decrease. Serotonin is a chemical that can help you regulate emotions.
The symptoms of obsessive-compulsive disorder can be broken into two areas: obsessions and compulsions. Most people with OCD have symptoms from both areas. Some people with the disorder have only obsessive or compulsive symptoms.
Although obsessive and compulsive symptoms are different for each person, there are some common obsessive thoughts. Examples of obsessive thoughts include:
  • a fear of germs, illness, or disease
  • a fear of hurting oneself or others
  • violent thoughts of a sexual nature
  • a fear that you will lose things that are important to you
  • a focus on preciseness and order
  • a focus on superstitions
  • strict devotion to religious beliefs
Compulsions are behaviors and while behavior will vary for each person with OCD, there are some common compulsions. These include:
  • checking and rechecking tasks that have already been completed
  • continually calling friends and family to see if they are safe
  • counting or repeating words
  • excessive cleaning or washing
  • ordering things
  • excessive praying
  • accumulating trash that has no value or worth
If you have symptoms of obsessive-compulsive disorder, your doctor may perform some tests to rule out other health conditions. He or she will complete a physical exam and will order blood work. Your doctor may also recommend a psychological evaluation. During your psychological evaluation a doctor will talk to you about your symptoms. He or she may also ask you to complete tests such as the Yale-Brown Obsessive Compulsive Scale (YBOCS). These tests can help diagnose OCD.
